this is peer feedback for my magazine. I took some of this feedback on board, for example someone said that my magazine was too plain so I added a new background and added some new headlines.

the feedback I liked was that my article is set out well, that my image is suitable for the article, my fonts are good and my pull quotes are good. Advice that I liked was that I needed more pull quotes, I could put a pull quote in the article, it's too plain and I need to fill in space. Something I like on other peoples' is how to do an effect on the background.

front cover first version
this is my first version of my front cover and I gave it to my teachers for them to give me feedback and for me to then improve my cover using their feedback. the feedback that I got was to move the masthead down so you can see it easier, I also got told to vary my fonts for the plugs and i got told to make the 'creamfields revisited' title bigger and brighter. I chose my central image because it is a big and dominant image that takes up a lot of the front cover which emphasises that the person on the front cover is important. I chose the selected pose because it has little expression on his face and that is what I wanted because that is what appeals to the target audience as they are often represented to have little facial expression. I chose the plugs to be in white so that it can stand out from the blue background and make it easier to read.
I chose the background colour of my double page spread because it is a colour which attracts to the target audience because the audience like bright colours such as blue and purple. I organised the text into columns so it's more organised and easier to read. I put the picture on the other side with a pull quote above it and the pull quote is outlined to make it stand out more. some feedback I got was to add more pull quotes in the empty spaces and make the image larger.

quiz analysis
The results of my quiz did not surprise me as only 5 out of 18 people read music magazines. This is because most people of the age range don't have much of an income and due to music magazines being free online and its better for this age range because of them not having much of an income. Another thing that didnt surprise most that most of the people in the survey listened to music through a phone or mp3 player. This is because the age range is a very technological generation and having the music right there for them is good. The response for favourite music genre and favourite artist were varied because of different people liking different music. Another thing that I noticed is that 17 out of 18 people who did the survey had been to a music festival or concert. this is because they are very popular and the media helps to make them popular by writing articles about them.

I have learned from analysing front covers that colours are important in order to reach your target audience. For example a heavy metal magazine would use colours such as red and black to appeal to their audience and their darker side. By comparison a more mainstream magazine uses bold, striking stylish colours to appeal to a target audience who like to follow the crowd. I have also learned how a layout can appeal to an audience, for example an indie magazine would have a simple layout to appeal to their audience as it represents most indie people's attire as they like to keep it simple. By contrast top of the pops has a very frantic layout where there are pictures all over the cover and different things scattered around this could convey that it appeals to an audience that is energetic and likes different things going on. Another thing that I learned is that facial expression can appeal to different audiences. For example a dance magazine could have a woman with an inviting facial expression to show that the women that it appeals to are seductive. This contrasts to top of the pops where the smiles are inviting but not seductive because of the young target audience as they would like the people on the cover to look like nice people.
I have learned from analysing double page spreads that enticing your audience to read the article is very important. also appealing to your audience is important because if it doesn't appeal to them then they wouldn't buy the magazine. I also learned that in most conventional magazines there is a large image on the left hand side followed by a big heading and the article on the right hand side.

the magazine i am researching is mixmag. it is a music magazine aimed at the dance music genre. the appeal of the magazine is that it strictly covers the dance genre which is rare. techno is the institution that makes mixmag. the target audience for mixmag is people ages 16-25 because these are the people who like dance music the most. the artists that are shown in mixmag are shown as young and up for a good time like the people who the magazine is aimed at. the magazine covers mainly dance music but will cover any genre which is similar to dance such as deep house. Bauer music is an institution that makes music magazines. they make NME magazine. this would be a good institution to make my magazine because they make NME which is one of the most popular magazines in the UK.

Attached is my magazine front cover, contents page and flat plan.
For my magazine I wanted a professional looking title so I took the sunderland college logo off the internet and used that as my magazine masthead. i also wanted to show that it is a monthly magazine so I added the word 'monthly' underneath the title. the image I used is a picture of some of two of my friends from college who were standing in the corridor, this is effective because people who know them will pick up the magazine so they can see them on it. I chose to have the writing on my cover to be a shade of blue because it is more appealing than just plain black and white writing. I put the stories in bold text because it will stand out more and therefore people will find it attractive because it will stick out and they will want to read more about the titles. For the contents page I included the stories and the pages they were on so that the readers can navigate through the magazine easily. on the front cover I also included how get in touch with the college via social networking sites. I learned from the process how to use different elements of photoshop to construct a front cover.

Things a college magazine should be/include are:
A contents page to let the readers know what is included in the magazine and what page they will find things on, for example if they are looking for the news bulletin then they would look at the contents page to find out what page the news bulletin is on.
An attractive cover so it will appeal to the selected audience which is students, staff and parents. it should also include language which the students, staff and parents can understand and relate to.
The magazine should also include important information about things that are happening in the college, such as revision sessions or extra curricular activities.
At the start of the academic year the magazine could also include a map of the campus to help new students find their way around the building and get to their classes without getting lost.
Also the magazine should be free so that the students, parents and staff can read the magazine and find out information or read it leisurely free of charge. This also encourages reading among students and is keeping their brains active.
The magazine should also include a section where students can find out contact details or where to go if they have a query for example if they wanted to change course then they would need to go to the learning centre and get an amendment form and fill it out with a member of staff. The magazine should also include images to anchor the text and make the text more understandable for the readers.
